The story follows Robert and his wife Maia, who move from London to Maia's childhood home in a small American town following the death of her father. Shortly after arriving, Robert discovers an old portrait in the attic of a man who looks exactly like him—a figure the locals refer to as "The Visitor".
As Robert investigates further, he finds more depictions of this doppelgänger throughout the town’s history. His obsession grows as he begins to suspect a local conspiracy, eventually leading to a dark revelation about Maia’s family roots and his own identity.
