During the robbery, Frank Pierce is killed by his own men as they attempt to desert him. While the heist is successful, a skirmish with Kiowa warriors breaks out. During the chaos, the horses are spooked, causing most of the gold to be lost or accidentally scattered among the Kiowa tribe. Taw and Lomax manage to recover only a small portion, agreeing to meet in six months to divide the remains once the heat from the law dies down.
