The episode begins with Danielle Rousseau arriving at the beach camp, exhausted and frantic. She delivers a dire message: "The Others" are coming for the survivors, specifically for the "boy" (Claire’s newborn, Aaron). This news sends the camp into a panic. To protect everyone, Jack and Locke decide they must open "The Hatch"—the metal door they found in the jungle—to use it as a fortified bunker.
