The party is hired by a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker to escort a wagon of supplies to the frontier town of Phandalin . However, they are ambushed by Goblins from the Cragmaw tribe, leading to a rescue mission at the Cragmaw Hideout .

This sandbox portion of the adventure offers several side quests in the surrounding wilderness, including the ruins of Thundertree (home to a young green dragon), Old Owl Well, and Cragmaw Castle. The party is hired by a dwarf named
