The story follows (Juliette Binoche), a free-spirited single mother who arrives in the village during Lent with her six-year-old daughter, Anouk. Vianne opens a specialized chocolate shop, La Céleste Praline , which causes immediate controversy in the strictly Catholic community.

Her presence and "pagan" treats are viewed as a threat by the village mayor, (Alfred Molina), who leads a crusade to boycott her shop. Despite this, Vianne’s warmth and intuitive chocolate selections—which she claims to match to a person's personality using a Mayan spinning wheel—gradually win over the marginalized locals.
