The story follows Joy (Elizabeth Banks), a traditional housewife in 1968 who discovers her pregnancy is life-threatening. After an all-male hospital board denies her request for a medical termination, she finds a flyer with the simple instruction: " Call Jane ".

Directed by Phyllis Nagy , Call Jane is a fictionalized drama inspired by the Jane Collective , a real underground network in 1960s Chicago that provided safe abortions when the procedure was illegal. The film shifts away from traditional "trauma-focused" tropes to focus on female solidarity and practical activism.
