The battle begins with Sawatari using his massive whale-like Doll, Baura, to attack Mayuri. Sawatari initially gains an advantage by using Reishi from the surrounding Soul Society environment to heal his wounds and stay in the fight.
To finish the fight, Mayuri releases his terrifying Bankai, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō . The giant, caterpillar-like entity releases a lethal poison mist. Although Sawatari attempts to have Baura absorb the poison, Mayuri's Bankai stabs the Doll with multiple blades, causing a massive explosion.
